Talking point: The future of the tire industry is important in Nova Scotia, where Michelin said it plans to support its 3,600 existing full-time jobs as the province’s largest exporter. The project includes a $140 million expansion of Michelin’s Bridgewater, N.S., plant, which will add over 70 new jobs. The company is finalizing an agreement for $44.3 million from the federal Strategic Innovation Fund for the project and a provincial tax credit of about $61.3 million. The investment comes as the tire sector transforms to accommodate EVs’ higher weights, quieter engines and quick acceleration, and as autonomous-driving companies rely on smart tire sensors for more data.
