The Canadian inventor of Ethereum quote-posted a recommendation from crypto security researcher Justin Drake for digital asset holders to enter “bunker mode,” moving their holdings to new digital addresses before AI cracks the cryptography protecting them. (The Logic)
Talking point: The crypto world has long fretted about the possibility that quantum computing will break the cryptography that makes blockchains work. But Drake said OpenAI’s recent dump of hundreds of proofs for mathematical problems that humans haven’t been able to solve suggests “mathematical superintelligence is upon us,” leaving that cryptography vulnerable sooner than expected. Buterin said this is “not at all extreme to predict,” but cautioned against hasty moves, since botched migrations can also lead to lost funds. Buterin said Ethereum is already moving away from cryptography practices that could be vulnerable to AI.
