The federal government is to spend $4.7 billion to build and maintain the new cars for Via Rail’s regional and long-distance services like the Toronto-Vancouver Canadian and the Montreal-Halifax Ocean lines, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced. Besides the direct industrial impact, he touted travelling by rail as important to Canadian life and culture. (The Logic)
Talking point: Via’s continuing regional and tourism-oriented services are to complement the planned high-speed Alto line between Toronto and Quebec City. Some of the oldest cars in Via’s fleet date back to the 1940s. Alstom, which owns former Bombardier train-making facilities in Quebec and Ontario, is to have the first of the new cars in service by 2031 and will use Canadian materials and labour, Carney said.
