Talking point: Helcim is one of the last Canadian-owned merchant payments processors, a distinction it has been using to market itself to patriotic customers in the country. CEO Nicolas Beique told The Globe and Mail that business surged after U.S. private equity firm Francisco Partners announced a $2-billion deal to buy Moneris, the last merchant payments processor owned by Canada’s Big Six banks. Canadian policymakers have emphasized the importance of sovereignty in the national payments system amid a trade war and annexation threats from the U.S. One of the products Helcim plans to expand with its new resources is an extension that lets customers substitute the default payments processor embedded in booking, invoicing or other software with its own.
