Talking point: Major streaming services said as much themselves last week after the Canadian broadcast regulator released the new policy, which stems from the Online Streaming Act. The regulator increased the amount streaming services like Amazon and Netflix have to put toward Canadian content from five to 15 per cent. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre told CBC in an interview that the move might provoke retaliation from the U.S. government, and that regardless, streamers would just pass the cost on to consumers. He wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney to ask him to block the CRTC’s order.
