Talking point: The CRTC’s order stems from the Online Streaming Act, which U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has flagged as a trade irritant. The new policy makes Canada’s streaming framework one of the most aggressive in the world, said Josh Tabish with the Chamber of Progress, a left-leaning tech-industry trade group. He said the costs are likely to be passed onto customers. Several streamers had already launched a court challenge against the CRTC’s original 2024 decision to impose a five per cent levy. Culture Minister Marc Miller is assessing the implications of the CRTC’s decision.
