The prime minister said that “absolute purity in generation” would get in the way of a goal to double Canada’s electricity production by 2050. He kicked off a consultation on how the federal and provincial governments can achieve the target with one concrete promise: to loosen rules set in 2024 that several provinces said would leave them with fossil-fuel power plants they’d be unable to use and big bills to replace them. Talking point: Equipment and vehicles running on electricity from fossil fuels are still more efficient than having them run on their own small generators and engines, the government’s new discussion document said. Carney said dramatically increasing generation and linking provinces’ systems to each other will save money and cut greenhouse gas emissions, but will take significant co-operation, planning and training for people who can do the work. The government aims to have specific plans by the autumn.
