At the close of the summit in Indonesia, Xi Jinping told the prime minister it was “not appropriate” that everything they discussed in a previous exchange had been “leaked” to the press. A roving camera crew captured the moment. Trudeau told Xi Canada and China can work together on issues they agree on. “Let’s create the conditions first,” Xi said through an interpreter, but offered Trudeau a handshake to end the exchange. Talking point: Trudeau’s talk with Xi was informal, on the sidelines of the summit in Bali, and the account given just to the journalists travelling with him. Still, the Prime Minister’s Office routinely shares fairly bland “readouts” of Trudeau’s calls and discussions with other leaders. The White House does the same with Joe Biden’s exchanges and 10 Downing Street with Rishi Sunak’s … and Xi’s office with his.
