Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said in a statement Thursday that he met with U.S. climate envoy John Kerry at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to discuss how to cut methane from their countries’ oil and gas operations. After the meeting, Guilbeault’s department published proposed amendments to existing regulations that would further restrict methane output. (The Logic)
Talking point: The proposed rules follow Canada’s hallmark promise at COP26 in Glasgow last year to cut emissions from its oil and gas sector by 75 per cent from 2012 levels by 2030. Also on Thursday, Canada’s competition bureau announced that it is investigating claims by a group of health-care professionals that the Canadian Gas Association made false and misleading representations that natural gas is clean, environmentally friendly and affordable.
