Talking point: Halp aims to simplify the international college-admissions service industry, and offers its services to students online and for free. CEO and co-founder Matthew McLellan told The Logic it was “huge” to have Serena Williams’s venture fund back the startup. “I think the core thesis of their fund around… making access across all these different things, improving people’s lives—like helping folks climb the ladder, whether it’s education, or otherwise—lines up exactly with what we’re trying to do,” he added. This is the third Canadian company that Serena Ventures has backed, according to PitchBook. The funding will be used to build software capacity and hire more coaches to serve the 18,000-family long waitlist, McLellan said. College placement fees are Halp’s main source of revenue. McLellan said it’s looking to announce deals with banks, insurers and telcos for additional commissions soon.
