Talking point: VoltaGrid offers “microgrids,” or small electricity networks powered by natural gas generators, to help data-centre operators power their facilities. Demand for off-grid data-centre power supplies has skyrocketed as companies struggle to gain access to overburdened electrical networks. Canadian entrepreneur Nathan Ough, who co-founded VoltaGrid, has touted the company as a potential key player in U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to build data centres powered by fossil fuels. CPP Investments backed VoltaGrid during its US$73-million fundraising in 2021; the company has raised a total of US$7.4 billion, according to PitchBook.
