The Fiat and Chrysler parent company said Friday that the future product line for the plant located northwest of Toronto will be announced at a later date, and it will be retooled from 2024 to 2025 to “support the company’s electrification plans.” (The Logic)
Talking point: The announcement fleshes out the future of the automaker’s Windsor assembly plant, which will be equipped to make all-wheel-drive and muscle cars with battery ranges up to 800 km. But the announcement adds little certainty for the Brampton plant’s more than 3,000 workers. Analysts and workers have raised concerns about the future of the Brampton plant over the past year, with mayor Patrick Brown warning in February that uncertainty about the contract beyond 2023 could lead to suppliers and workers shutting down or moving on. Last month Stellantis announced a plan to invest $3.6 billion in the two plants, with provincial funding of up to $132 million specifically for Brampton. Meanwhile, South Korean company DongShin Motech announced today it will lease land in Windsor for a $60-million battery casings plant.
