The automaker said in its 2021 Impact Report that it had established a direct supplier relationship with Vale. The miner said it would ship the metal to Tesla factories in the U.S. Neither disclosed the value of the deal. (The Logic)

Talking point: Tesla’s disclosure confirms earlier reports that the companies had agreed to a multi-year deal. Its Impact Report found that nickel creates the highest share of emissions of the inputs in nickel-based batteries, at about 31 per cent. In addition to ditching some nickel-heavy batteries altogether, Tesla said it used BHP’s approach to create an emissions-tracking system, which it will use as it ramps up raw material purchases. Its strategy includes the global Battery Passport Steering Committee, a group it co-chairs with Investissement Quebec senior project director Simon Thibault that includes two Natural Resources Canada representatives.
