The four members of Kingship aren’t people—they’re characters from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, a successful NFT project involving headshots of cartoon primates that can sell for millions of dollars, and its spinoff, Mutant Ape Yacht Club. (The Logic)
Talking point: How can four NFTs be a band? For precedent, you might look to the late 1990s band Gorillaz, created by U.K. musician Damon Albarn. The four members of that “virtual band” were animated characters with elaborate backstories, appearing to produce music that was actually created by Albarn in collaboration with rotating featured artists. There doesn’t appear to be much of a tie-in with any actual musicians here, however: “Kingship is mostly just a brand partnership,” according to CoinDesk. According to Universal, people who own Bored Ape and Mutant NFTs will get early access to “all Kingship NFTs, experiences and narrative selection.”
