The Ottawa-based firm will reserve 40 gigabits of broadband capacity from its forthcoming Lightspeed low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, under the deal. It is also committing to spend $20 million in capital expenditures for the $6.5-billion project in the province. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Progressive Conservative government allocated $2.8 billion in new money for broadband in its March budget, with a target of province-wide connectivity by 2025. Last month, the provincial and federal governments announced they were splitting a $1.2-billion effort to link up nearly 280,000 households. Telesat’s Lightspeed is similarly cross-subsidized, with the federal Liberal government signing a $600-million deal for access to the network in July 2019. Quebec, meanwhile, made a $200-million equity investment in the firm in February and gave it a similarly sized loan, after it promised to spend $1.6 billion in manufacturing and operations in the province.
