Talking point: The group wants one code for all of Canada—a distinct difference from the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food’s recent recommendation—that “must be developed by industry for industry.” It suggested that one of the principles should be “promoting fair and ethical dealings in contract negotiations” especially where a power imbalance exists. Calls for a code of conduct have heightened recently amid criticism over the power that some large grocers yield over prices and suppliers. In March, Empire CEO Michael Medline, who criticized his competitors for levying higher fees on suppliers last fall, co-drafted a possible code.
