Talking point: Ostensibly aimed at “malign entities,” the initiative, which includes removing “untrusted” applications from mobile app stores, is aimed clearly at China, the only government mentioned in the U.S. plan. The measures have serious implications for Huawei, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, along with myriad Chinese tech producers, and keep U.S. software producers out of countries like India, where China dominates the smartphone market. The U.S. said over 30 countries and territories have already agreed to comply with its Clean Network program. The federal government did not respond to The Logic’s request for comment on whether it’s one of those countries before publication time.
