Calgary is a city in flux; a microcosm of the global energy transition. Since 2015, the city has benefitted from the region’s oil-sector slowdown, as talent and money sought new opportunities outside the tar sands.
In the first quarter of 2022, venture capital investors funnelled more money than ever into Alberta’s innovation ecosystem with companies in the province raising $466 million—more than 90 per cent of which went to Calgary firms. The city is home to a new Energy Transition Centre, its downtown core is undergoing a revitalization to attract new residents, and it’s poised to benefit from Alberta’s push to recruit companies on the bleeding edge of innovation.
