Although the University of Toronto is preparing to return a research grant from the charity arm of bankrupt crypto empire FTX, Western University is waiting for a specific request from FTX Foundation Inc. before doing anything with a $250,000 grant for research there, its acting vice-president of research Bryan Neff told The Logic in an emailed statement. The University of Ottawa, which the foundation included publicly as the recipient of a $250,000 grant, has not acknowledged questions about its plans. (The Logic)

Talking point: It’s not clear the foundation still exists after the November resignations of its managers; the foundation isn’t among the array of FTX entities whose current management has called for contributions made by or for FTX-affiliated executives to be returned. But it was funded largely by FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who now faces charges in FTX’s collapse. Fellow executives in the empire, who were also “major” contributors, have pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy.
