Next May, the annual tech event will be called Web Summit Vancouver. The Dublin-headquartered company will run the last edition of Collision in Toronto next week. BetaKit first reported news of the move on Wednesday. (The Logic, BetaKit)
Talking point: Collision first alighted in Canada in May 2019, initially for a three-year term. BetaKit reported that publicly funded Destination Toronto was providing $6.5 million in annual funding for the conference. Last June, Web Summit the company announced a one-year extension. The company did not announce how much, if any, funding it will receive from any level of government for the Vancouver conference. The city already hosts TED, typically in April. Previous Vancouver bids for Collision have reportedly been hampered by the city’s relatively small number of hotel rooms. Co-founder Paddy Cosgrave returned as CEO of Web Summit in April, having resigned last October after investors and startups boycotted its Lisbon conference over his tweets about Israeli military actions in Gaza.
