Talking point: Visa’s bet on open banking comes as Canada is considering its own policies. On top of financial institutions, Tink said that thousands of startups use the platform, which “makes it easy for people to connect their bank accounts to a new generation of financial services.” The deal comes as Visa seeks to diversify its business beyond traditional credit-card payments after a failed deal to buy Plaid, which offers APIs to connect financial-services platforms. Visa also announced Visa Installments for Canada on Thursday with Scotiabank and CIBC, after watching the trend “for years” amid “rising consumer demand for more flexibility in payment options.”
