Talking point: Reliable internet access has become increasingly important during the pandemic as schools and businesses shift to work from home. Despite that, in July, median download speeds for rural internet users were about 10 times slower than speeds for urban internet users. The federal government is trying to address the problem. In May, Rural Economic Development Minister Maryam Monsef promised to accelerate the deployment of a $1.7-billion fund to improve rural internet access. So far, though, that fund has not publicly announced any money.
