U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the Trump administration is “on track” to sort out many of its issues with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), but not before July 1, when the countries must share their plans for the trade deal. (The Logic)
Talking point: President Donald Trump is “dissatisfied with a lot of the outcomes” of the USMCA, Greer said Tuesday at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., suggesting the U.S. is unlikely to “rubber stamp” its renewal. Starting the 10-year countdown to withdrawal may not be the end. “We’ll be on the path to going out,” Greer said, “but we’ll be in negotiations during that time and try to resolve some things sooner rather than later.” The U.S. has begun its formal talks with Mexico, but not yet with Canada. “Who is ‘ahead’ at any given moment is less important than ensuring Canada reaches the right conclusion for Canadian workers,” said Gabriel Brunet, a spokesperson for Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
