Federal court records indicate that Edward Dubrovsky, a longtime industry leader who wrote a book about communicating with ransomware gangs, faces charges in Texas related to an alleged conspiracy to commit extortion by impairing the confidentiality of information. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of a “suspected co-conspirator” with ransomware gang ShinyHunters, which broke into the FBI’s own systems, though the scant legal filings so far do not make a connection between Dubrovsky and that arrest. Talking point: ShinyHunters has claimed massive hacks of data from Ticketmaster, Telus Digital and Instructure (whose Canvas online teaching system is used by numerous schools, including in Canada), among many others. Patel’s stint as FBI director under President Donald Trump has been riddled with problems, however. Those include a criminal case against the Southern Poverty Law Center over its payments to informants in white-supremacist groups, charges that outraged civil rights activists.
