Talking point: The U.K. is implementing the tax despite vocal opposition from the U.S. In January, France postponed plans for its own tax until the end of 2020, after Washington threatened sanctions. Spain, which passed its own digital tax in February, is also pushing ahead. This is the second time this month the U.K. has diverged from the U.S. on tech policy, following Westminster’s decision to keep using Huawei equipment in Britain’s non-core 5G network. Canada’s Liberals have promised to implement a digital tax that would be in place until the OECD finalizes an international approach. U.S. tech firms fighting these taxes have a new front to worry about, too: Maryland, New York and Nebraska have all proposed their own digital taxes.
