In a 17-page lawsuit, the U.S. Justice Department’s civil rights division said the social media company did not sufficiently advertise at least 2,600 jobs between 2018 and 2019 that ended up being filled by immigrants on H-1B visas, while Facebook was applying to sponsor the employees for green cards. (The Wall Street Journal)
Talking point: The suit alleges Facebook did not advertise the jobs on its website, and did not accept online applications for the positions. “And even when U.S. workers do apply, Facebook will not consider them for those advertised positions,” the suit reads. The Trump administration has long taken issue with the H-1B program, saying it poses a threat to the employment of American workers. The program issues up to 85,000 visas in a given year, and is a ticket to permanent residency for many international students. In June, the U.S. government suspended new H-1B visas until the end of 2020, although this past October,a federal judge blocked the enforcement of the ban on some workers. Canadian tech companies have largely benefited from the pool of available talent struggling with visa difficulties south of the border.
