The government security review of 5G technology that could result in a ban on Huawei will reportedly not be finished any time soon. Meanwhile, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the final decision would not be affected by Chinese ambassador Lu Shaye’s warning yesterday that there will be “repercussions” for a Huawei ban. (Bloomberg)

Talking point: A ban would further worsen strained relations between the two countries, but this fight has been about a lot more than Huawei’s access to the Canadian market since the company’s CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver last month. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spoken to the leaders of Singapore, Finland, Argentina and New Zealand over the last week to build support against the jailing of two Canadians and a death sentence given to a third following Meng’s arrest. The focus will soon shift to the World Economic Forum in Davos, which several ministers will attend, as The Logic reported this week. Lu said the Canadian delegation should not raise the issue at a “place for discussions on economic issues,” but Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said she won’t be staying silent.
