Talking point: Borderless, which uses fellow Toronto startup Cohere’s large language models, is bringing together two very 2020s business trends. The first is firms growing more comfortable with hiring everywhere and letting workers log in from almost anywhere. The second is developers’ newfound ability to build applications with other companies’ AI infrastructure, via commercially available APIs. Clients can use Borderless’s first product to generate compliant contracts and handle admin for staff based in other countries, automating the kind of employer-of-record service that grew rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Borderless CEO Willson Cross previously started and sold GoFetch, a Vancouver-based dog-walking app, while chair Sean Aggarwal is on the boards of Lyft and Sonder.
