Bruce McKean, an early investor in Shopify, has given more than $200 million to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, which the institution’s foundation believes is the most ever donated to the cause of mental health in Canada’s history. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: McKean has been donating to CAMH for years, but the hospital finally revealed his identity alongside an announcement of his $100-million donation, which will help pay for two new buildings. The former diplomat came into wealth after helping Lütke launch Shopify, a company that is now worth more than $100 billion. McKean told The Globe and Mail he was inspired to donate after watching loved ones struggle with mental illnesses. Shopify money is behind the health-focused Thistledown Foundation, which is run by Fiona McKean—Bruce’s daughter and Lütke’s wife—and the Northpine Foundation, co-founded by early Shopify investor John Phillips.
