Talking point: TikTok is challenging an August 6 executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump that would effectively ban it from operating in America if it isn’t sold to a U.S. company by September 15. This kind of order has been successfully challenged on due process grounds before, like when Chinese-owned Ralls got a judge to give it more time to comply with a 2012 order from Washington to sell a wind farm near a U.S. military base. More time could be very valuable for TikTok right now, since it’s in talks with Microsoft and Oracle about a potential sale of its U.S. operations. The fight between the U.S. and TikTok is something Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent significant time and effort lobbying for. The Wall Street Journal reported that Zuckerberg told Trump personally that Chinese tech firms are a threat to the U.S. and more important than regulating Facebook.
