Talking point: Thomson Reuters sued the now-defunct Ross Intelligence in 2020, claiming it used content from Thomson Reuters’ legal platform Westlaw to train an AI model without consent. It’s the first high-profile win in a growing number of lawsuits alleging unfair use of content like books, film and art to train and build AI models. Ross Intelligence argued that its use of Thomson Reuters’ content should be exempted under the “fair use” doctrine, a U.S. law that allows for limited use of copyrighted material for things like teaching, research and news production. “None of Ross’s possible defenses holds water,” Judge Stephanos Bibas said in his decision.
