The RCMP’s drones account for most of the 1,628 in the publicly acknowledged federal fleet that come from Chinese manufacturers, according to tallies tabled in Parliament this week in response to a formal query from the Opposition Conservatives. (The Logic)
Talking point: The reported data has a potentially significant gap: The Department of National Defence (DND) refused to say anything about its drone fleet, citing “national and operational security considerations.” The query from Tory MP Eric Melillo asked how each department protects drone-gathered data from Chinese government snooping; DND said it has measures “to manage data handling and restrict network connectivity.” Fisheries and Oceans Canada reported that it has 287 Chinese-made drones that it uses for purposes from overseeing vessel boardings to sampling whale breath.
