Talking point: Texas attorney general Ken Paxton said Facebook’s use of facial-recognition software, an important tool for the social network’s photo-sharing feature, resulted in “tens of millions” of violations of state law for photos uploaded between 2010 and late last year. In 2020, after failing to have a similar class-action lawsuit in Illinois dismissed, Meta settled for roughly US$650 million. The Texas lawsuit comes three months after the company said it would end its use of facial-recognition software and delete the data of more than one billion people. “These claims are without merit and we will defend ourselves vigorously,” said Lisa Laventure, Meta Canada head of communications, in a statement to The Logic.
