Tencent subsidiary TiMi Studio, developer of Call of Duty: Mobile and Honor of Kings, has shut down its Montreal game development studio. The studio was first announced in 2021 with a remit “to create AAA open world multi-platform games,” but it never released a title. Tencent did not immediately respond to The Logic’s request for comment. (Game File, The Logic)
Talking point: The reported shutdown continues a string of blows to the Canadian game industry, following last week’s layoffs at Ubisoft Toronto and in recent months, the closures of Ubisoft Halifax and NetEase’s Bad Brain Game Studios, another nascent Canadian developer that was closed before it launched its first game. While the market for game jobs has been tight, the market for games themselves remains strong. Earlier this month, market research firm Circana said it expects 2026 to see U.S. consumer spending on games hit an all-time high.
