Talking point: Starlink is the leading provider of low-earth orbit (LEO) internet, operating at altitudes below 2,000 km. But Musk’s alignment with U.S. President Donald Trump and the risk Ukraine runs in depending on Starlink is giving competitors new openings. Shanghai-based SpaceSail is one big-name challenger, both in vying for Brazil’s business and in trying to snag contracts around the world. Telesat declined to comment, but it isn’t a newcomer to the Brazilian market, having delivered conventional satellite services there for years. It has run LEO trials with Brazilian telcos in 2021 and 2022 using a prototype satellite for its in-the-works Lightspeed constellation. Like Canada, Brazil has resource riches in remote places hard to serve with land-based internet technology.
