Tech execs and investors take a victory lap as the budget delivers their wish list

Tax breaks that Ottawa announced in Thursday’s budget largely deliver on what the country’s tech leaders had been asking for. “I can’t see too much daylight between what we were calling for and what the government has done,” said Patrick Searle, CEO of the Council of Canadian Innovators, which had helped organize a campaign proposing capital gains exemptions for entrepreneurs. (The Logic)

Talking point: The Canada Growth Incentive offers tax exemptions on up to $15 million worth of gains a company earns from the sale of a business. It also extends the rollover period to defer taxes for shareholders who reinvest proceeds from business sales into new Canadian small businesses. The incentive is Ottawa’s answer to a U.S. tax break that Canadian tech leaders say lures founders and investors south of the border. Benjamin Bergen, CEO of the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, said the changes could make Canada more competitive with the U.S. by giving founders more reason to start companies here and for investors to back them. “We’re very pleased with what was in the budget,” he said. Build Canada had a similar reaction, with the tech advocacy group calling the budget “the first federal budget in over a decade to recognize and reward entrepreneurship as a key driver of economic growth.”
