Talking point: A company spokesperson told Reuters that the project is ready to ramp back up to full production once the site is clear of wildfire risk. Cenovus, which operates its Sunrise project nearby, and Imperial Oil, which owns the nearby Kearl oilsands mine, have not yet had to shut down those projects, representatives told Reuters. Canada’s wildfire season has been tame compared with recent years thus far, but that might change as hotter July weather could hit Western provinces in particular already suffering from drought. Last year was Canada’s worst wildfire season on record, with two blazes in B.C. alone causing $720 million in insured damages.
