Talking point: Trump announced plans to increase tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25 per cent to 50 per cent at a rally in Pennsylvania Friday evening, and later posted on social media to say the change will come into effect Wednesday. Canada exports about half its domestically produced steel—about 6.4 million tonnes in 2024—and the U.S. is by far the biggest customer. The United Steelworkers union echoed Cobden’s concerns, and said hundreds of thousands of jobs are threatened by the change. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the government has committed to using only Canadian aluminum and steel in national infrastructure and defence projects, but Cobden says that must be paired with measures at the border to prevent unfair traders from dumping steel in Canada.
