A coalition of tech companies including Spotify, Basecamp and Match Group have banded together in protest of how Apple and Google run their app stores, which the companies said “crushes” fair competition and innovation. The members of the Coalition for App Fairness are taking particular issue with the 30 per cent fee the two firms charge for payments made inside apps in their systems. (The New York Times)
Talking point: The coalition was founded after Epic sued Apple and Google for booting its popular Fortnite from their app stores after the game maker created an in-app payment system in violation of the two firms’ rules, in order to avoid the 30 per cent fee. Executives at Bluetooth tracker Tile, Match Group and Spotify then spoke out in support of Epic, arguing against the 30 per cent fee. The coalition’s other demands include getting Apple and Google to not prioritize their own products on their app stores. The alliance against Big Tech comes as European regulators open an antitrust investigation into Apple’s App Store tactics.
