Elon Musk’s company will build the spacecraft to take astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972, according to a document obtained by The Washington Post, beating out Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin and a third company, Dynetics. (The Washington Post)
Talking point: Blue Origin had partnered with Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Draper to form a “national team” for consideration. NASA was expected to choose two of the three contenders to build the spacecraft; the sole choice signals the space agency’s trust in SpaceX. The company has already sent astronauts to the International Space Station, and this NASA contract marks another victory for Musk, who aims to send humans as far as Mars “and beyond.” Blue Origin, meanwhile, is focused on getting “to space to tap its unlimited resources and energy” to help preserve Earth for future generations. It rejects the idea of a race to space.
