Talking point: Made-in-Canada ride-hailing competitors to Uber have struggled to gain traction in recent years. Montreal-based Téo Taxi launched in May 2015; it folded in January, leaving 450 people out of work. Toronto-based Facedrive intended to launch in Montreal in 2018, but has not yet done so. Zoom hopes to buck that trend by being more responsive to local concerns than Uber may be able to, given the latter’s global footprint. For example, Zoom launched a service called Zoom Her in response to requests for a feature allowing women riders to request women drivers.
