The Japanese conglomerate reported ¥1.18 trillion in profit, equivalent to about $10.6 billion, for the quarter that ended on Sept. 30. That’s up from a ¥931.11-billion loss a year earlier and marks its biggest quarterly profit in two years. (The Wall Street Journal)
Talking point: SoftBank is one of the world’s most high-profile tech investors, but in recent years it has struggled with returns. It has reversed that trend, with gains in companies in its Vision Fund, including Coupang, DiDi Global and T-Mobile US. The firm also reaped returns from several of its Indian portfolio companies that had successful initial public offerings, including Ola Electric Mobility and food-delivery app Swiggy. Co-chief executive officer Rajeev Misra also officially stepped down from the Vision Fund on Tuesday. Misra had been instrumental in establishing the fund with Masayoshi Son in 2017, helping raise nearly $100 billion from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Apple, among others, and went on to make big bets on hundreds of unproven startups.
