Talking point: Vancouver unicorn Dapper Labs is best known for NBA Top Shot, its hit trading platform for blockchain-based basketball highlights. Since 2019, the company has also taken on the difficult and risky task of building its own blockchain from scratch, called Flow, rather than relying on an existing one, such as competitor Ethereum. Dapper knows the limitations of Ethereum well, having famously slowed the network to a crawl thanks to traffic from its early NFT game CryptoKitties in 2017. The company’s challenge will be convincing developers and brands to build on Flow and forgo the network effect of existing activity on Ethereum.
