Matthew Boswell told the Competition Bureau’s annual summit that big companies’ dominance in developing artificial intelligence tools makes upstart firms’ access to technology, talent and data an important concern for the agency he leads. (The Logic)
Talking point: The bureau started a consultation on AI and markets last March with a discussion paper and a call for public input on what new problems the technology raises. Also on the list: transparency in how models do what they do, to ensure fairness; promoting competitive markets for AI tools; and whether AI applications like algorithm-driven pricing tools diminish fights for customers’ business. In a video address, U.S. competition regulator Lina Khan told the summit that governments are grappling now with the consequences of failing to deal with the rise of Big Tech in the mid-2000s and shouldn’t take the same approach to AI as they did with “Web 2.0” companies.
