Talking point: One of the key figures behind the new company is president and co-founder Yannis Mallat, a former top Canadian executive with Ubisoft. Mallat resigned in 2020 after claims about sexual harassment at the French gaming company prompted investigations into its culture. Umanaïa expects to hire roughly 100 employees in Montreal over the next three years. Virtuos’s investment comes as other gaming giants take steps to capitalize on the city’s talent pool for game development. Notably, Amazon and Tencent have recently opened studios in Montreal.
