Consumers will be able to split their bills into four bi-weekly, interest-free tranches when buying from U.S. merchants that enable the function for Shop Pay—the e-commerce giant’s checkout system linked to its payment service. Silicon Valley-based Affirm will handle collections. Shopify first announced plans for inbuilt installment functionality at its United at Home conference in May. Talking point: The Canadian firm has let merchants offer their customers pay-later options in other markets; in Germany they use Klarna, which allows 30-day deferrals. Shopify has previously outsourced key parts of its inhouse payment service to outside providers—Stripe processes most of its transactions, for example. Affirm will finance the purchases, paying merchants up front, the spokesperson said, meaning Shopify doesn’t have to carry the cost of the credit.
