Talking point: The change in leadership comes as Magna wades further into the electric-vehicle industry, along with other big manufacturers. The company is planning to build an all-electric SUV for Florida-based EV startup Fisker and take a six per cent stake in the firm, and in February, Magna unveiled its electric drive system in a demo car. Kotagiri told The Globe and Mail that Magna plans to build full EVs as well as parts for other manufacturers, though it doesn’t plan to wind down its combustion-engine division. He comes to the role having been entrenched in Magna’s R&D business. Prior to becoming president, he served as Magna’s CTO, where he managed the company’s innovation and new-product strategy.
