Talking point: Scotiabank CEO Scott Thomson has previously cited subsidiary Tangerine as a brand that’s important to its Canadian growth strategy. The renewed focus on the business is part of Thomson’s strategic plan, unveiled in December, to prioritize Canada, the U.S. and Mexico over foreign markets. Tangerine—an online bank with no branches—has more than two million clients and more than $40 billion in assets. Direct online banking is highly competitive, as fintechs like Wealthsimple and Koho increasingly offer bank-like services. In a release, Scotiabank’s Canadian banking head Aris Bogdaneris said he is confident Weeks will deliver on “the strong growth potential” of Tangerine.
