Talking point: Sanctuary CEO Geordie Rose has form with frontier technology—he previously co-founded Burnaby, B.C.-headquartered quantum firm D-Wave Systems, then started San Francisco-based robotics startup Kindred. Ocado, an automated grocery-warehouse firm, acquired Kindred for US$262-million in November 2020. Sanctuary takes the amalgam of AI and machinery a step further. It’s building “general-purpose robots” that look and think like humans, letting them do similar physical tasks in places like nuclear plants or mines that can be dangerous. In March, Sanctuary raised a $75.5 million Series A round from strategic investors including Bell, Magna, SE Health and Verizon Ventures, as well as Export Development Canada. The SIF has previously backed Canadian robotics scale-ups Attabotics and Kinova, which are building more narrow-purpose applications.
