Talking point: The move reinforces Rogers chairman Edward Rogers’ tight grip on Canada’s largest sports conglomerate. His company proposed the acquisition of BCE’s stake as part of a blockbuster $4.7-billion deal, giving Rogers majority control over MLSE, which owns the Raptors, Maple Leafs, Blue Jays and other Toronto pro sports franchises. Rogers also has a deal letting it buy the remaining 25 per cent next year from Larry Tanenbaum, considered a key Ujiri ally. Edward Rogers reportedly sought to oust Ujiri as far back as 2021 amid friction between the two—a contention the former Raptors president has downplayed. In 2019, Ujiri led the Raptors to the franchise’s only championship, though the team’s on-court results since have been mixed.
Correction: Rogers’ purchase of BCE’s stake in MLSE has not yet closed. This story has been updated.
